Podcast interview with Anders Ellemann Kristensen in Beijing, General Manager, Albatros Travel China: Why is China's population declining a decade earlier than expected?
‌In this podcast [min 19], Insightview has interviewed Anders Ellemann Kristensen, General Manager at Albatros Travel China. Soon, China is poised to confirm that its population declined in 2020 [once-in-a-decade census], according to an article in the Financial Times, China set to report first population decline since 1949. If so, the decline comes one decade earlier than predicted by most population forecasts such as the United Nations population projections. In China, this is a highly sensitive issue because Beijing is doing whatever it takes not to follow the same path as Japan. [read the Global Times article, China's population to decline 'as early as 2022,' demographers say, refuting FT report.]

A‌t first glance, the solution to the problem seems pretty straightforward. The government should allow Chinese families to have as many children as they want. Anders explains why it is not that easy. Also, ‌Insightview discusses with Anders the short- and long-term consequences of China's demographic headwinds, which is slowly moving the country towards "Japanification". Anders believes that China needs more immigrants, although this seems highly unlikely.
